At last year’s Oscar’s there was a whole situation on how there were no African Americans, Asians, etc.,  or any other race besides Caucasians nominated.  But with this year’s Oscar’s rolling around there is more diversity then ever.

At this years Oscars, there have been African American nominees, Indian nominees, Puerto Rican nominees, and Asian nominees. With a whopping 9 Oscar nominees for African Americans, a new path is being paved for equality in the entertainment industry. Viola Davis is nominated for her work in the film “Fences”, which makes this her third Oscar nomination, making her the most nominated African American actress ever. Lin Manuel Miranda is the third person of Spanish descent to ever be nominated for the category of Best Original song for his song of “How Far I’ll Go” in the film “Moana”. And speaking of “Moana” it is the first Polynesian animated film to be nominated for the category of Best Animated Feature Film. “I am so happy that people of different ethnicities are all given a chance in many categories at the Oscar’s.” said sophomore Alyssa Case.

Dav Patel, a British actor of Indian descent, is marking a major moment in history as the first ever Indian individual to be nominated in the category for Best Supporting for his acting in the film “Lion”. Also it is first time that an Asian individual, Ai-Ling Lee, has been nominated for the category of Best Sound Editing for his work in the film “La La Land”. Sophomore Britney Hammerling said: “I’m so happy that there is so much more diversity at the Oscar’s this year! I don’t know who will win because there is a lot of competition.”

The importance of diversity is not stressed enough in the entertainment industry or even everyday life. Diversity is such a big deal it shows how equal things are and how everyone can be treated the same without being ridiculed.  It’s awesome how each ethnicity has a representative for them to represent them at this years Oscars. Whether it is 1 person or 20 people, it’s always a good thing to have someone represent who you are and to support and be proud of that. Sophomore Aubrey Bennet said that: “Diversity is such an awesome thing. It’s great how everyone can be equal and all be fair.”

With so much diversity in this year’s Oscar’s, this marks an invent in history of how equality is growing day by day and nomination by nomination in the entertainment industry.
