Is College Really Worth All The Money?

Owen Clements, staffer

As a senior who’s soon to enter college, I went around our school during various lunches and asked the student body one of the more pressing questions of our era: Is college really worth all the money they ask for? As currently 44 million Americans are in debt due to their previous student loans, I thought it would be best to ask students (mostly under 12th grade) what they thought on the matter. I got a lot of people who seemed to be on the fence on the matter, like Claudia (12th grade), who believe that it all depends on the college you go to, as “if you go to a trashy college, then you’ll [waste your time], but if you’re going to a great, well-respected college, then it should be worth it.”, or Autumn (12th grade), who said that what matters is what happens after you attend college, “If you end up getting a high-paying job with your degree, then [yes]. If not, then [it probably wasn’t worth it]. As most of the seniors came to the consensus agreement that it’s a toss up, most of the underclassmen have mixed beliefs. For example, Noah (9th grade) believe that it’s all going to be worth it, “Because the people who finish their degrees often make a lot of money with the jobs they get.”, but Brian (11th grade) believes that “ What you learn [in college] is good, they ask for too much money to learn those things.”

All the various answers gave me a wider perspective on what our students think about college and their ridiculously high prices. What are your opinions on this?
