Are we all doomed?
Most students have accumulated excellent skills in mathematics, sciences, English, and extracurriculars, but once high school ends, where does that translate too when there is no more homework?
Finances, taxes, every annoying aspect of being an adult, unfortunately not taught at all by our school. Finally being set free from our parents sounds great, until the adult responsibilities set in, which if your parents haven’t prepared you, no one has.
Students have spoken out countless times and feel as if learning how to manage finances, file taxes, and understand basic legal processes help us become independent and responsible adults. Why are finding missing sides to triangles more important than filing taxes which can get you locked up if you mess up!
Many students have expressed there worries about this topic.
“I believe schools teach valuable information when it comes to college and curriculum, but none of us know how to be adults, how do I know when to finalize my taxes, renew my drivers license, pay a mortgage? No one has taught us!” ~Mallory Baker
“My parents have explained briefly what all of this adult stuff is, but I feel like we can use our time more wisely in school, rather than mental health videos no one watches, why not teach something fun and important during rams period?”
~Ben Burry
Life skills like budgeting, saving, and investing are essential for financial success. If we learn about taxes, students can understand how to calculate their income, deductions, and credits, ensuring they pay the right amount and avoid penalties. Moreover, teaching these skills early on can empower students to make informed financial decisions and avoid falling into debt traps.
Secondly, understanding taxes promotes civic engagement and responsibility. By learning about the tax system, students can better comprehend how public funds are used to support infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other services. This knowledge encourages active participation in society and can inspire students to advocate for fair tax policies and contribute positively to their communities.
Lastly, teaching life skills and taxes equips students with practical knowledge they’ll use throughout their lives. Whether they become entrepreneurs, employees, or freelancers, understanding taxes is crucial for financial planning and compliance. By integrating these topics into the curriculum, schools can empower students to be financially savvy and confident in managing their own affairs.
Some students feel hopeless, and the school system seems to be setting us up for disaster!
