If you’re a 14 year old unemployed girl like me, spending $100 on one makeup product or clothing piece is outrageous. Since 2021 prices have increased, $20 is the new $5. There are great items out there worth your money, but many can be overpriced and could be found cheaper with better quality.
On social media you could be easily influenced. Many Tiktoker’s do partnerships with brands, allowing them to get free things if they share the product or item with their viewers and followers. Seeing someone you admire using a product, could easily make you want to buy it. I know when I see a pretty girl wearing cute jeans, I go to the website and check them out. Many of these brands being promoted are very expensive. Having access to a Dupe could positively impact your wardrobe and bank account.
One great place to find dupes is Amazon. For example, a popular brand at the moment is Skims by Kim Kardashian. She sells all types of clothing, her most popular is the “Fits Everybody Long Sleeve T-Shirt” at the price of $56. Many people are willing to pay that price, but $56 for a shirt isn’t necessary. I would rather pay 15-20 dollars on Amazon instead.
Next there’s makeup. Makeup is very expensive, so drug store brands have taken it into their own hands of creating a replica of any of the most popular items. A dupe that’s better than the original is the L’oreal Paris “True match Lumi Glotion” a dupe for the Drunk Elephant “D-Bronzi drops” Both of these products are used to the give your skin a natural glow with a sheer bronze. I asked Kenzie Johnson which she prefers the “Drunk elephant” or the “L’oreal Paris”? Kenzie said, “I like the L’oreal Paris Lumi Glotion better because it’s cheaper and comes with more product, also they have a better shade variety, and it gives a really nice glow”.
The brand most known for duping makeup is Elf Cosmetics. This makeup brand is very popular because they have no fear in recreating products identically from brands like “Charlotte Tilbury” and “Dior”. Almost every month Elf comes out with a new product that blows everyone’s minds. The most recent being their lip oil. It’s a dupe for the Dior lip oil. Since the release of this product, stores have been out of stock for weeks. Kendall Hinsion has experience with both the Dior and Elf lip oil. I asked her which one she prefers and she replied with, “The Elf lip oil because of the price” alongside the fact it’s “very hydrating and long-lasting”. The product itself is practically the same, but the price isn’t.
Overall, there are many brands who create dupes from viral products. The question is are you willing to pay those $40 or rather pay $8?
