Prom can be considered one of the biggest events of the school year to some people besides graduation. Prom offers the opportunity for students to make priceless memories with their friends. There are many reasons why people should attend prom. However, there are also many reasons that many people could think otherwise.
One pro of going to prom is all the special moments. Prom presents chances for unforgettable experiences including promposal, dancing and taking photos. Another pro is socialization. Students have the opportunity to socialize outside of the classroom during prom, strengthening existing friendships and forming new ones. Like here at Lake Mary’s prom, I found myself walking around the whole room talking to everyone that I know. Some people also attend parties after the dance is over which is another opportunity to socialize. Lastly, students get to dress up formally. Prom is an occasion to get dressed up, look glam, and participate in a formal event, which can be fun and exciting. Senior Mia Neal said, “I had the best time with my friends for my senior prom.”
One con of going to prom is the cost. Prom can be very expensive for some students and families because of the fast-rising costs of tickets, outfits, transportation, and other related expenses. Here at Lake Mary the price of one ticket was $120 and this was before they raised the price. Another con is that some people may feel pressure. There may be pressure to have the perfect prom experience, and if those expectations aren’t fulfilled, that pressure can turn into stress and disappointment. Personally, I put a lot of pressure on myself because I wanted my photos to look perfect and I wanted everyone to have fun. Lastly, expectations vs. reality. There are occasions when prom expectations don’t match the real thing, leaving some disappointed. Some people may see prom as being like what it’s like on TV or on the internet. Junior Kaia Fitzgerald said, “It was pretty stressful trying to figure out the whole transportation deal and where to go after prom.”
The decision to attend prom or not ultimately comes down to personal taste and situation. Even though it can be a fun and unforgettable experience for many, it’s crucial to balance the benefits and drawbacks and decide what feels right for you. Making decisions that are in line with your values and offer you happiness and fulfillment is what counts the most, regardless of whether you decide to attend prom or not.
