What is a “Dystopian society”?
The dystopian genre is a really intriguing subject that authors like to write about. The reason why is because it’s unknown what might happen to our society after we die. The authors write on this subject, bringing ideas and action to what could possibly happen, but 99% of the time it turns for the worse. In the early 2010’s, 2014 was a really big year for people who write in this genre. Getting adaptations from their books, making a lot of money in box offices, and persuading young adults at the time to think differently. However, this genre kind of slipped away.
should we bring back this genre?
Movies like the Hunger Games trilogy (2012–2015) were always iconic sagas that everyone knew. Divergent was also a really big movie in 2014, but it was also kind of the downfall of the genre. The movie trilogy started in 2014, also known as the golden year, when this genre in books and television was really big. The first movie people would say was amazing and made us think that this type of world could possibly happen. By the second movie, things felt a little different, and by the third movie, “Allegiant,” they lost us. didn’t get good ratings and didn’t give us the expectation of what our future would be. It was unrealistic. It didn’t even get the fourth adaptation in the book “Four” because the actors dropped out of the project to do other roles.
However, movies like “The Hunger Games” stayed consistently on topic. A girl who volunteers for her sister in the games. Ends up being hated by the president. She even ends up starting a rebellion with half of the country on her side. Speaking of this storyline, Suzanne Collins continued to write a prequel to the Hunger Games story 10 years later in 2020, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.”
The adaptation of the book was just released in November of 2023. Even 10 years later, the adults, who were just kids then, continued to make this movie big. Even when the original actors weren’t in the movie. It was set way before the time of the 74th Hunger Games, bringing the story back around 65 years. It shows us the story of who we grew up to know as the villain, Coriolanus Snow, the future president of Panem. The story also shows us what it was like after the dark times. How the Hunger Games started, and tells the story of a girl named Lucy Gray.
With the people who grew up with this movie series watching it, it also brings us the younger generation. People who were very young when the original movies were released. Now that they’re teenagers, they’re old enough to see the prequel in theaters, and it brings everyone together. Due to all of the attention this genre continues to get, should we bring this era back?
