The dress code at Lake Mary HS seems to have disappeared. For that, I’m grateful.
Walking in the halls:
Walking in the halls at LMHS is an experience you’ll never forget. Bright and early at 6:40 in the morning you get to see crop tops, short shorts, tube tops, hats, boys low-riding their jeans, sports bras and not much else, kids in what looks like underwear and all sorts of clothes that don’t even seem allowed in a school zone; but it’s all there at the one and only Lake Mary High School.
Sage Ragas thinks, “I think that dress code shouldn’t be extreme, of course banning wearing extremely inappropriate things. But in the end school is about learning, not what people wear.”
Is dress code an option?
For most females at all age groups, the dress code has seemed to be an option at one point in time. It was just something you’ll hear a few times out of the year and such an easy thing to ignore. Today, it’s non-existent. Believe me I love to wear crop tops, it makes me feel confident which can be empowering to some, but some females take crop tops and just turn it into a string with a thin piece of fabric.
Freedom or taken to far:
The flexibility of the dress code is wonderful, don’t get me wrong. I love how it’s not strict and hunting students down in the hallway for a skirt being a little above the knee or a bit of a stomach showing. I think it’s a great way of self expression and having people find themselves in their styles and a great form of showing your personality and interest. But it says something when someone who appreciates this freedom says maybe “it’s a little too free.” With tops becoming sport bras or shorts that don’t necessarily cover anything, it’s definitely something when someone who hates dress code like I do starts to think, ‘maybe what I just saw in the hallway is a bit too much….”
Leigha Strickland believes, “Yes I believe that the dress code schools follow are completely unfair to the students. I understand if it’s something too revealing it shouldn’t be allowed. But students just wearing crop tops or shorts and getting yelled at can make them feel uncomfortable and it’s completely reasonable to punish a student for wearing something they feel comfortable in.”
What do you all think? Should we have zero dress code like now, should we go back to enforcing traditional dress code or should there be a compromise? Leave your thoughts in the comments.
