Feeling lame and boring? It’s not your fault!
I’m trying to write an article about my generation not knowing anything, but I have no idea what to say. This is the problem.
Don’t be upset. It’s not your fault. Blame the filter bubbles.
Freshman Jordan Warnke says, “On my Tik Tok I want to see indie videos, music, and room decoration ideas. Outside of that, I’m pretty clueless.”
That’s the problem. The internet will eventually limit your world to only that. You get what you want, but the cost is that you are excluded from everything else — making you boring and dumb….
Filter Bubbles are where internet users encounters stuff based on the algorithms that personalize an individual’s online experience. It generates information where people are only being given news stories and social media posts biased to your existing beliefs, isolating users from differing viewpoints and perspectives.
Gen Z grew up with technology, the internet, and social media, which sometimes causes them to be stereotyped as tech-addicted, anti-social, or “social justice warriors”. Heres an example that could add to the fact that I think the government is listening to our conversation. Say I’m on instagram and I see an ad on something that I mention earlier that day, I would find that really creepy because I haven’t searched anything about it. Then an ad that would be perfect for what I was talking about pops up. This could play into filter bubbles by the internet changing your explorer stuff into things you would like or prefer.
This could affect into kids not knowing stuff they should know for school or stuff it general. But you can’t do anything about it. Like things like politics, space, climate change, and current events happening in the world. Kids don’t really search things up like that so it would be left out of their algorithms.
So, we are going to interview some people in this class and see what they would like to see on their Tik Tok for you page, Instagram explore page, or to Youtube.
“On YouTube, I want to see things like music and sports.” -Alex Morgan
“I like seeing dances and cheering things plus all of the funny videos all over my for you page on tik Tok.”-Tattianna Hudson
“I would like to see funny videos, indie music, and softball.”- Callie DiMascio
The issue is that if you just see what you like, then you become a limited person and therefore BORING. So, put down the phone sometime and maybe look up some new things.
