In honor of Black History month, I’m going to ask you a question that we often contemplate on my beautiful native island of Jamaica.  If you were stuck on one of the remote islands of the Caribbean with only one small box containing two items. What would they be?

If I was stranded on an island and I could only bring one box with two items what would it be: 

A flare gun 

A First aid kit

A compass(can’t rely on GPS) 

These things are one of the many things that would be on my list. When picking items that can determine your chances of survival, it is wise to not pick material things such as fast food, pots. lamps, etc. These items are things that can run out faster than the time you spend on the island itself. But even though I said no material things! What three songs would you listen to if you only had one record player with you on the island? 

Back in the 1800s before many of us were even born, African Americans had to use the supplies around them to help them survive escaping from slavery. They would walk barefoot for miles nonstop just so they could get to their freedom. Even when they escaped they had little food, no shelter, no medical care, and on top of that, the constant threat of local sheriffs. They had to figure a way to survive with the items at their disposal.

Question 1: If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could only bring a box with two items what would it be?

 Answer 1: Person responded with water and fast food. 

Reply: What if you run out of fast food? 

 Answer: “Then I have water” 

Interviewee 2: Anonymous 

Question 2: If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could only bring a box with two items what would it be? 

Answer 2: Person responded with a hammock and a box of matches 

Reply: What would you do if you ran out of matches? 

Answer: “Uh caveman style it” 

Reply: Best answer yet!

Interviewee 3: Tafari 

Question 3: If you were stranded on a deserted island and you could only bring a box with two items what would it be?  

Answer 3: Person responded with a sharp machete and a boat. 

Reply: Like a portable one; the blow up ones? 

Answer: No, a machine, one with boat paddles

Reply: But your stranded, that means the boat that you were on doesn’t work! 

Answer: That’s why I have the paddles. 

Reply: Okay sure!
