I go to public school like the rest of you. Yet, I have to pay to participate in cheerleading. I have to pay to participate in band. I have to pay to participate in Lacrosse. You have to pay too much. Apparently a free government funded education is no longer free.
My parents pay taxes for my school. A lot of taxes. My parents also explain that they never paid anything for their public school education back in the day. Why do we have to pay now?
In 2023, the price ranges from $700 to $3500. Fixed costs include uniforms, accessories, registration fee, travel tuition, etc. Paying for all this would be a minimum of $500 to $700. Cheerleading is one of those high school sports activities on the expensive side. The cost required to be a part of the high school cheer team may shock new cheerleaders and their parents. Most high schools fund their football program but why not cheer?
In 1960s cheerleading was considered an extra curricular for girls but over time cheerleading has became more competitive and is considered a sport, the cost of cheerleading has dramatically increased. However, the schools are requiring more but making the team members pay all of the expenses by themselves. I interviewed a mother that has to pay for these expenses and she stated that “I feel like the prices may be a little high but I understand they are necessary for the maintenance of the sport”. I interviewed Abbigail Excellent who also has to pay for these expenses, she states that “it is way too much money so early in the season, nobody has to pay that much for a high school sport”. I also interviewed my father, he states that “A government funded school should not make students pay for extra circular activities, The high school is making students pay for unnecessary things and provide no fund raising at all”. I also interviewed a coach of this sport, she states that “cheerleading is very competitive now and it is 100% necessary to charge participants to be able to pay for all of the competitions and uniforms needed”.
