Having a job while still in highschool can be stressful which is why working over summer break can be a great way to make some money. But some people just want to spend their summer relaxing and sitting by the pool or the beach. Which is why being a lifeguard would be a perfect summer job. The youngest age of becoming a lifeguard ranges from 15-16, but each facility is different. The requirements differ but some of the training you could have to do to become a lifeguard is: Swim 300 yards continuously using the breast or front crawl, Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs, Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds, and Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Even though being a lifeguard seems nice, swimming is not for everyone but luckily there’s other options.
While working only during the summer is ideal, some may have to work during the school year as well which is why working in fast food could be a good option. It may not seem all that fun but it’s a good way to make some money in highschool. Places in Lake Mary like Crumbl Cookies, Chick-fil-a, Dunkin Donuts, and many more are currently hiring. As of April 29th, the average hourly pay for a fast food worker in Florida is $13.26 an hour. So say you worked 12 hours in a week you could make up to $159.12 but keep in mind there are taxes on your paychecks so this number may not be exact. Having a little bit of your own money seems nice as a teenager, but it could start to negatively impact your grades in school.
Working long hours after school can be really draining on highschool students. After waking up early in the morning and staying up late because you had a long shift can really affect your physical performance at school and your grades might start to drop. Some ways to prevent this could be time management. Making sure that you spend your free time wisely is very important. For instance say you just worked a long night shift and you stayed up really late. The next morning might be rough but grab the Celsius and get to work. Using all the time you have at school working on school work can help prevent piles of homework for you to work on when you get home. This could free up some time for you to relax, taking a break is very important for your mental health.
