There’s no study guide on how to be a parent. There are books you can read but taking time to adjust is all up to the person. Parents are humans too, and sometimes they have issues that they don’t deal with when they need to and it can have effects on their kids and just cause a repeating cycle.
Traumatic events can have positive or negative effects on people’s lives. Some people are strong enough to learn and grow from the experience and become a better person for themselves and others while others fall into habits that destroy them. Whether some want to admit it or not, therapy is needed to help people understand what’s wrong with them. Some may say they don’t need therapy because it was so long ago but if an issue is never brought up or dealt with then it won’t ever leave the mind. The issues can be projected onto others and can create a toxic household. Some may be able to see through a person and what’s happening whether it’s a doctor, therapist or even a kid. Age doesn’t matter, it’s the knowledge of the person and the maturity in their mind.
Many adults don’t want to admit that they have problems and when a child addresses it because they can see some of their problems, they take offense. Of course everyone goes through different issues and a person’s past can hurt them but healing takes time no matter how long. Yelling and getting upset at your child just because they wanna help you is not an okay thing to do no matter how badly you may have been treated.
Kendal Hinson says, “Sometimes parents learn from their own parents’ mistakes and treat them better so they don’t have to suffer and then sometimes they struggle figuring out their own child’s mental health. Sometimes the parent suffers from their own problems and it’s in their kid and they don’t question until it’s too late.” It’s important to try to love and understand yourself when you’re struggling so others around you don’t have to suffer the consequences.
Raelynn says, “It either makes them raise their kids better or they raise their kids exactly how they were raised” and many agree with this. Parents should make sure that if they know they have an issue or trauma they need to fix it and make sure they’re stable before they bring new life into this world without knowing how to handle it. They’re many things parents could do to try and be the best they can be without overwhelming themselves and their kids will do so. At the end of the day everyone is human and we all have a lot to learn and do.
