Many people think that Lake Mary High School NJROTC is just about marching around, spinning rifles and doing push-ups or sit-ups; Although, that’s just not true! You may be one of those people that wanted to lose a couple pounds, or learn a few new tricks or even get a new workout routine. However, you’ll learn that there’s a lot more to unveil than just that. NJROTC isn’t just so you can be a cold-hard soldier when/if you join the military. However, if you are interested in joining the Military they will help you. NJROTC is a citizenship program that helps their cadets reach their personal best.
Why should you join NJROTC?
If you want to develop strong leadership skills, or learn about citizenship or just the maritime heritage, you should join NJROTC. Through NJROTC, you will gain valuable life skills like discipline and responsibility, and potentially improve your college applications. NJROTC can also prepare you for a career not just in the Military, but outside of the Military as well. Through NJROTC, you can develop a better character of yourself both mentally or physically.
What does NJROTC even mean?
NJROTC stands for “Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps”. The NJROTC program was established by Public Law in 1964; The program is conducted at accredited secondary schools throughout the nation, by instructors who are retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers and enlisted personnel. These retired officers and enlisted personnel take the time to help young men and women better themselves.
What do you do in NJROTC?
If you are a cadet in NJROTC you will quickly notice, it’s fairly easy but it’s not for the ill-natured. Cadets take the NJROTC creed, and pledge the pledge of allegiance every day. You show up, and you have PT once a week. Just what is PT anyways? PT is Physical Training, during which you will work out your entire body through a set workout routine that rotates two times. After PT Day, we have Thursday, which is inspection day. Cadets are expected to wear their NSU’s (Navy Service Uniforms) or on occasions, their red polo T-Shirts. You are expected to have a well-maintained uniform which should look pristine and new. Your shoes are expected to be decently shined, and all accessories must have been fitted to proper measurements. You’ll also receive lectures on Naval Science and US-History and will receive a test every once and while, but besides that; We have our competition teams which are extra-curricular programs that you can join and receive ribbons or medals from, as well as gain memorable experiences.
Who teaches Lake Mary High School NJROTC?
The Lake Mary High School NJROTC is led by SNSI (Senior Naval Science Instructor) Lieutenant Colonel Barth. Alongside him, you have NSI (Naval Science Instructor) Chief Daniels and NSI First Sergeant Serrano. The NJROTC mission is to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment.
What does the NJROTC value the most?
The NJROTC follows three core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Although, these Core Values have deeper meaning to them. Through these three Core Values, you will learn Citizenship, Leadership, Self Discipline, time management and to take pride in your personal appearance. The Lake Mary High School NJROTC is committed to excellence and fair treatment of all.
Just how do you learn these lessons?
You can learn leadership through practical application in activities like drill teams and community service, and by placing cadets in leadership positions to increase their responsibility. Lake Mary High School NJROTC takes self discipline through structured activities like their Physical Training (PT day) as well as the weekly inspection on Thursday. You can learn to take pride in your personal appearance with their strict grooming standards for both females and males inside of NJROTC. Finally, NJROTC also teaches time management by encouraging their cadets to be accountable for their time and responsibilities.
