Rod Wave is officially the only rapper to ever have a #1 album on top 100 billboards consecutively 3 years in a row. With his 5th album “Nostalgia” recently released, he breaks records for all of rap and becomes the only other artist besides Taylor Swift to break this record but is his album worth a listen? Rod Wave is a melodic style rapper who reflects on his childhood and relationships. He kicks off the album with the song “Nostalgia”, it starts with a sample from “Where Did The Day Go?” by Wet, an R&B duo, their vocals emphasize the title, then Rod Wave compares his popular career to his early career and dream as a teen. In the next song “Long Journey” He relates back his hard troubles growing up and thanks god for how far he’s come. In “Call Your Friends”, Rod Wave talks elaborates on his priorities being his friends and family and he sends a message to his listeners about how its important to check on your loved ones even if they might seem fine. In track 4 “HG4”, he encourages his fans and listeners to stay true to their dreams because his career was once a dream but he made it through all his hardships as a teen. In “Come See Me”, Rod Wave explores the love and heartbreak of a fading relationship and how it can affect someone like himself. In “Crazy” he samples Paramore’s “Ain’t It Fun” for the chorus and he talks about his life as a famous rapper in his verse. Track 7, “Love For A Thug”, Rod Wave speaks on his experiences with a girl in another relationship and he questions if there’s any “real” love for someone like him. In “Checkmate” Rod Wave is influencing his fans to stay smart in their life while he talks about his personal struggles like drug usage and difficult relationships. In “Fight The Feeling”, track 9, Rod Wave reaches out specifically to his female fan base and talks about partying and pretending through the various struggles. The next song “Turks & Caicos” is the only song with a featured artist, 21 Savage, and it has more of an upbeat tune as Rod Wave and 21 talk about partying with different girls. “Boyz Don’t Cry”, the 11th song on his album, Rod Wave has a more personal rumination as he touches topics like his heartbreak, criticism, and the loneliness of being on tour all built up inside his mind. In “Pass You By”, He encourages people to chase their dreams for the chorus and in his verses he talks about his friends and family and how he chased his dream. In “Great Gatsby”, Rod Wave reflects on his personal experience with a woman he loves but can’t be with and he tells his story through a modern lens of the 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby”. The next song, “Keep It G” Rod Wave discusses different struggles and how he stays true to himself even with his fame. Track 16 “Rap Beef” after his melodic interlude about love, he illustrates the cutthroat rap industry and his place in it. In track 17, “Back Lit” Rod Wave is looking back at his progress and success despite the different challenges he’s faced while connecting with his listeners. In the last song on the album, Rod Wave closes using a soft and melodic sample from singer, Sadie Jean, to talk about his relationships before fame and how he’s happy with his success but isn’t particularly happy. Overall, a great album for his fans and new listeners.
