Students should have more time in between classes
Psychological studies show that students who have more time in between classes have a significantly higher performance in classes. In Florida, the standard break in between classes is 5 minutes. Students struggle to get to their classes in time. This produces tardies, which affect a student’s record and stresses us out; if done enough, it can cause detention or worse. The short bit of time can cause brawls too. Students often find themselves pushing, and running to get to class on time. This can especially cause altercations when there is a wave of students pushing each other to get to their classes on time. Not to mention that it gives them more time to gather their items and books from their lockers. I’ve interviewed 3 students from different grade levels, to see what they think about this.
First up, is Lake Mary High-school Senior, Diego Acevedo. Diego has been tired of getting marked tardy just because he entered the class 5 seconds after the bell rang. Diego said “This is something that is unfair. This school has got to give us more time, you know? I mean, normally colleges give like 15 minutes to travel in between classes, some even use cars, so why can’t we get more time?”. Diego expressed his disapproval of this minimal time. After Diego, I talked to Alexander Trimm, a sophomore at Lake Mary High School. He said, “It gets hectic when the bell rings, especially if you got a class in the portables”. These are all active students that are all complaining about the same issue, what does that tell you? Lastly, I briefly interviewed Hayward, a freshman at Lake Mary High School. Comparatively, Hayward actually thinks that there is enough time in between classes. “The time we got is ok, because if we get more time, people are going to start talking”. Hayward thinks that more time would lead to issues.
There have not been many known studies of this issue specifically, however, there are studies that show that Home-schooled students score higher on exams compared to brick and mortar students, which is correlated to students not having enough time in between classes. You see, when you have a flexible schedule with more time in between classes, it helps you retain information better. This by itself proves that there should be more time in between classes, not considering all the other supporting factors.
By all means, schools should implement different and more relaxed schedules in order to improve academic performance, stimulate brain production, and promote student interactions.
