Schools all around the U.S. have worryingly low security measures. The most recent study done on this by the National Center for Education Statistics says, “About 857,500 violent incidents and 479,500 nonviolent incidents were recorded by public schools in 2021-22”. This statistic shows that there is an uprising in school related incidents. This mixed in with little to no security does not end in a safe teaching space for teens and teachers. K-12 public schools in the U.S. should legally be obligated to have the following: face recognizing cameras, locked doors, at least one official police officer, and multiple private security guards should be the standard public schools in the U.S. have.
I have interviewed 2 students in Lake Mary High-school on how safe they feel in the school. First up, is Abrahim. He is a junior at Lake Mary high-school. He said, “The school’s security is pretty good”. Abrahim trusts and relies on the school’s protection. Next is Shyann, a freshman at Lake Mary high-school. Shyann said that the school is way too easy to get in and that anyone can hop the fence. She is not confident in the school’s security.
Considering all of this, why should schools have higher security measures? Students and Teachers alike deserve a safer workplace in order to fulfill better integration in classwork, a more relaxed learning experience, and more active participation.
