Most schools require students to physically be present at school so that they can get their education. Due to it being a requirement for students to show up at school, there are consequences students can face for not coming to school and being present in their classes. If you have too many absences or tardies you risk getting a detention or even a suspension from school. Many students dread having to come to school, especially on days that they feel sick, unmotivated or overwhelmed. This is why some people feel like attendance being mandatory doesn’t help student success.
People who are in favor of attendance being mandatory argue that being physically present in class helps students stay on track in their education. Teachers provide direct instruction, answer questions in real time, and they create a structured learning environment which can be hard to replicate at home. Regular attendance also helps students learn skills outside of school by teaching discipline and responsibility, which are needed skills. Missing school too much can affect students pace of learning, they may have to catch up and that means they have to move at a separate pace than most of the class. This can lead some students to fall behind in class.
On the other hand, there are others who argue that strict attendance policies don’t account for students’ mental health and personal responsibilities. All students learn differently , some students may learn better independently or online while others might need time off due to stress, illness, or family situations.
