You Can’t Sit With Us

Kirsten Kossler, Campus Editor

As freshmen, the only preparation for high school is what is seen in the movies.  The yoga kids find tranquility on the campus grass while the alternative goth kids dance around a tree and the cheerleaders freely stunt and chant.  Let’s be real, none of this happens nor will it ever.  Yes high school has social clicks, it’s inevitable, but cinema stereocastes high school as mean girl valley and jock central.

It’s true, a high school cafeteria can be nerve raking at first, but you don’t see three plastics dressed in pink screaming “You can’t sit with us”.  Unfortunately, freshmen come into high school thinking this is how life will be.  Freshman Mia Mortenson said that she always wondered if high school would be like the movies.  However she was most worried about Freshmen Friday.

Oh yes, the oh so famous… Freshmen Friday.  The day that little 14 year olds dressed in white, are forcefully face planted into garbage cans.  Although this scene in the movies is always very climatic and usually emotional, it doesn’t happen at Lake Mary…. it’s a mythical day used to create more anxiety in the little freshmen souls.  Freshmen Kolten Kossler claimed that he always questioned if “Freshmen Friday” was legit or not but of course, as me being his sister, I fully convinced the gullible kid.

On the other hand, Lake Mary is one of the smallest schools in seminole county… not counting Crooms…no offense.  Seminole has over 3,000 students and is currently planning to build a freshmen campus for the future.  Imagine how freshmen would feel.  They are basically in their own private jail cell.  In relation to other schools, it is safe to say that Lake Mary is a close knit community.  We easily eliminate social cliques through our school’s love and support.

Lake Mary indeed has a sense of unity and family bond that ties our school together.  With pride, we all come together at pep rallies, games and lunchtime with undeniable spirit.  Without our different social cliques at Lake Mary, we would never have the amazing talent that we pride ourselves on but we must always remember that together we are RAMNATION.
