Flint Water Crisis

The Oscars have been around for ages honoring the best in the craft.  However, over the past two years there have been speculations as to whether or not the Oscars are biased against any race that isn’t white.  Although this is the second year in a row that the academy has nominated all white actors, this isn’t the bias that should be taking over news stations across the country.  There is a much more severe problem with lack of caring for a group of people happening right now that many people are not aware of.  In Flint, Michigan there have been severely unhealthy levels of lead in the water of Flint for the past two years, and this is the first anyone is hearing of it.

In Flint, 41.5% of people are living below the poverty line.  The EPA did multiple tests on Flint’s water during the two year span of no one knowing about the dangerous levels of lead in their water.  The real bias is not against black actors, but against the people living in low-income cities.  Federal agencies believe that they can hide information of this stature from the general public because Flint in a low income city.  Children have been ingesting lead for two years now.  The consumption of this high of a level of lead can lead to serious disabilities and diseases for these children later in their lives.  These people have been neglected because they are “not important enough” to care about.  If this crisis were to happen in a city like Los Angeles, or even here in Lake Mary there would be major lawsuits flying everywhere and would have most likely been taken care of immediately.  But because the city of Flint is poor and dominantly black the government pays no mind to it.

Another major problem with this crisis is that people are uninformed.  An anonymous source responded with “I’ve never heard of it.  Where even is Flint?  Wasn’t that the city that Jackie Moon played in in the movie Semi-Pro?  Yep they were the Flint Tropics.  Anyway, yeah I don’t know what it is.” when asked about his opinion on the Flint water crisis.

The lack of care and action brought towards the city of Flint shows the true bias that resides within the country.  The problems that we need to be paying attention to are not stupid issues like millionaires crying about diversity at an award show, but an entire city of people literally ingesting lead because the government won’t pay the any mind because they are living in poverty.
