Every four years the best thing in the world happens, the Olympics. Growing up I always looked forward to watching the Olympics with my family but while I would watch there
would be people doing phenomenal skills in their sports such as in skiing, swimming, or even track but in these amazing sports there’s people doing the most weird “sport” ever like it shouldn’t even be in the olympics because its not a sport.
I understand people work really hard to be in the olympics but some of the sports are just so random like break dancing. Break dancing was in the 2024 Summer Olympics and it was very controversial. Most of the people looked like they didn’t even know what they were doing. Rachael Gunn or as she called herself “Raygun” was known for her kangaroo hop was turned into a meme and was highly made fun of.
Another weird sport in the Olympics was ping-pong. Ping Pong has a strongly controversial reputation for being “weird” in the Olympics because it’s a “sport” where the equipment is constantly fighting against the physics of the game. It’s also one of the few sports that had to fundamentally change its rules because the athletes got too good for tv.
And I guess people actually watch this stuff because after the 2000 Sydney Olympics officials realized that the 38mm ball was moving so fast and was so small that viewers watching at home couldn’t actually see it. To make the sport “viewable,” they increased the ball size to 40mm. The result of this change increased air resistance and slowed the game down just enough for people and cameras to see it better.
