When most people think of swim team, they picture sleek goggles, smooth dives, and maybe even Michael Phelps-level speed. What they don’t see are the 5:30 a.m. alarms, the chlorine-stained hair, and the endless laps that shape what it really means to be part of a swim team.
Practice makes perfect
Sometimes us swimmers dread going to practice when we think about all the sprint sets and kick board sets. We sometimes even have to wake up for those early morning practices. We push our bodies to the limit every day and it shows all of our hard work and dedication. I asked a swimmer what are you most excited for this season? Savannah said, “This swim season, I am most excited to be a part of the team and participate in swim meets. Last season I was out because of a surgery and I helped out as an assistant, but now I actually get to participate in the pool, attend swim meets, and enjoy what swim has to offer.”
Team Bonds
Despite swimming being seen as an “individual sport,” the sense of team is strong. Teammates cheer each other on at meets, celebrate victories, and help pick each other up after a tough race. I asked one of Lake Mary high school’s varsity swimmers, what is your favorite thing about swim practice? Savannah says, “My favorite thing about swim practice is being able to hang out with my best-friends everyday. Swim is a hard sport, and when you’re with people that you enjoy being around, it makes practice much more fun.” Lake Mary’s swim team bond is strong. We lift each other up and support each other through everything in and out of the pool. These bonds are something to cherish forever.
What People Don’t Realize
The truth is, being on the swim team is tough. It’s not always glamorous, and it takes a special kind of determination to stick with it season after season. But for those who do, the rewards, friendships, memories, and the satisfaction of knowing you gave it your all make every early morning worth it. We may not enjoy the practice part that much but we get to see our best friends every day which makes it all worth it.
