Dating in high school has changed a wholeee lot, especially with social media influencing how relationships start and develop. One term that comes up a lot among teenagers today is “situationship.” A situationship is usually a romantic or talking stage between two people that isn’t fully defined as a relationship. Many teens say it’s confusing, while others think it gives them freedom without too much pressure.
For many high school students, situationships happen because of texting, Snapchat streaks, and hanging out without officially “dating.” Sometimes people act like a couple but avoid putting a label on it. This can lead to mixed feelings, especially if one person wants something more serious.
Ava says situationships can be stressful. “It’s like you’re basically dating but no one wants to say it out loud because the whole thing can come crashing down the minute one wrong thing is said. One minute you’re texting all day, and the next minute they act like you dont even exist. It can be really confusing.”
On the other hand, Jayden thinks situationships can work for some people. “Honestly, some teens just don’t want a full relationship because of school, sports, and everything else. A situationship can feel easier because there’s less pressure and drama.”
However though, not everyone thinks they’re a good idea. Mia believes situationships often cause more problems than they solve. “A lot of people say they want something chill, but someone usually ends up catching feelings. Then it turns into this whole thing where nobody really knows where they stand.”
Situationships have become a big part of Gen Z dating culture, especially in high school. While some teens see them as a flexible way to connect with someone, others feel they can lead to confusion and hurt feelings. As dating continues to evolve with social media and modern communication, situationships will likely remain a common topic among teenagers trying to figure out relationships.
